Marcus Smart will sit three games as punishment for his shoving a Texas Tech fan last night in Lubbock. The Red Raiders athletic department released the above video, alongside a statement from "superfan" Jeff Orr in which he claims he only called Smart "a piece of crap."
That statement is in considerable disagreement with what Smart allegedly claimed courtside as well as what the Internet decided Orr said. The video, meanwhile, is next to useless and is clearly there as some kind of GoPro sponsorship deal (Texas Tech is clear to mention it's GoPro footage in multiple places.) It does sound like somebody says "piece of crap" at some point, but since you can't see anything the video's relevance to the audio is impossible to verify. Here's Orr's statement:
I would like to take this opportunity to offer my sincere apologies to Marcus Smart, Oklahoma State, Tubby Smith and the Texas Tech Men's Basketball program. My actions last night were inappropriate and do not reflect myself or Texas Tech - a university I love dearly. I regret calling Mr. Smart a "piece of crap" but I want to make it known that I did not use a racial slur of any kind. Additionally, I would like to offer my apologies to Texas Tech fans that have been embarrassed by the attention this incident has created.
Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford would not comment on what Orr said to Smart, and Smart wasn't given the opportunity to share his side of the story other than a brief, prepared statement in which he apologized to Orr.
