Readers! We want your childhood sports stories. Heroic ones, and embarrassing ones. The time you closed your eyes, swung from your heels, and turned the dimpled Golden Boy's best fastball into a screeching rocket for a double. The time you heaved a half-court buzzer-beater, missed the basket by 25 yards, and hit a septuagenarian in the head. The time you turned an unassisted triple-play in kickball and won the fleeting adoration of the cutest girl in school, like this guy did:
When I was in 4th grade, I became a kickball legend. I was playing 2nd base, with runners on 1st and 2nd base, with no outs. Anyway, up comes the opposing team captain and he kicks a screaming line drive right to me (out #1). I catch the ball chest high, center mass. I pivot slightly to my right and notice the the runner on 2nd is desparately trying to get back to the base. I throw the ball and it hits him in the shoulder before he can regain the base (out #2). The ball, miraculously, one-hops right back to me. I turn almost ninety degrees to my left to discover the runner on 1st trying to get back to his base. I throw a perfect strike and hit him dead center of his back (out #3). Nobody can believe what just happened. I can't believe what just happened. It's dead silent for a lifetime. Then everybody starts jumping on me. And then the cutest girl in school - Terry Rainer- runs up to me and breathlessly tells me, 'you're so amazing!' not once, but twice. i didn't get laid but that was a pretty good fucking day of kickball. to quote phil connors, 'THAT was a pretty good day'
Man, that is one good childhood sports story. We want more of them. Post yours in the discussion below, or email us.
