Australian TV last night aired some truly strange video: Oscar Pistorius, reenacting the night he shot and killed Reeva Steenkamp.
The video, obtained and aired by Channel Seven's Sunday Night, shows Pistorius running on his stumps, arm outstretched as if holding a gun, and Pistorius picking up a woman's body from a bathroom and carrying her downstairs. Pistorius faces a murder charge for shooting Steenkamp through his bathroom door on Feb. 14, 2013; his defense is that he believed her to be a burglar.
The reenactment, performed in Oct. 2013, was done for Cleveland-based firm The Evidence Room to create a 3D animation of Pistorius's version of events. Paid for by Pistorius's uncle, the intention was to use the animation as evidence for his defense, but it was never introduced at trial.
Scott Roder, president of The Evidence Room, appeared on the broadcast and provided commentary over the footage and 3D reconstruction, leading to speculation that he sold the footage to Channel Seven. Even if that's so, Pistorius's lawyers say the footage was obtained "illegally," because there was an agreement not to release it until the trial was concluded.
Pistorius's attorney Brian Webber says, "We wish to make it very clear that the material that has been aired was obtained illegally and in breach of the non-disclosure agreement with The Evidence Room."
Webber states further that the Pistorius family consider this a "staggering" breach of trust and an invasion of their family's privacy.
