The NFL announced today that the league would stop using its tax-exempt status. Per the AP, Roger Goodell called it a distraction, because in the NFL, anything can be characterized as a distraction, even the requirement to pay taxes.
All 32 teams had previously paid taxes, but now the league’s headquarters will be paying taxes, starting this fiscal year. Of course, the NFL benefits in a small way: the salaries of Goodell and other big bananas can be kept private. The league can disclose them if they want, but why would it choose to let us know how much the commissioner’s getting paid to do his job so badly?
