40th-ranked Sloane Stephens upset 15-seed Venus Williams 7-6, 6-1 in their first round match at the French Open on Monday.
After a tiebreak to end the first set, Stephens cruised past Williams in the second. Stephens has made it to the fourth round at Roland Garros each of the past three years. This is actually Stephens’s second victory over Williams—she beat the legend as a teenager in an exhibition match.
The 22-year-old Stephens also beat Williams’s sister Serena during the 2013 Australian Open, making her one of only two Americans to beat each of the sisters during a Grand Slam tournament.
Williams was the oldest player in the women’s bracket of the tournament at age 34. She skipped the customary post-match news conference and issued a statement saying Stephens “just played better than me today.”
