Here we have Austrian climber Hansjörg Auer stuck on a face. By his own account, he lost his route with “no option anymore to climb up or down.” This is a terrifying place to be, even with the proper safety equipment. Auer, however, was only equipped with a thin rope, one ice screw, his harness, and a belay device. He had to get down by himself, and he did so in one of the most terrifying ways possible, slipping the rope over a tiny fragment of rock and rappelling down.
The rope was stable enough for Auer to get down safely, but the way it moves around before he heads down made my skin crawl.
