Earlier this week, Gareth Bale’s agent, Jonathan Barnett, proclaimed in an interview that Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo don’t hate each other. Rather than assuaging the situation, it appears that all the agent succeeded at was getting Bale to hate him.
According to a report made on Radio Marca today, Bale did not appreciate Barnett’s comments. The report claims that the Welshman has already apologized to Ronaldo for his agent’s words—which remember, weren’t just about the two Real Madrid stars’ relationship; Barnett also took a few jabs at Ronaldo’s off-field activities while contrasting them with Bale’s—and in fact is now trying to find new representation.
Barnett has to feel like an idiot. After bragging in that interview about the allegedly unrivaled power of his agency, and how he likes to needle his rival, superagent Jorge Mendes (who represents Ronaldo), with Bale’s all-time largest transfer fee, Barnett forgot the first rule of business and life: don’t ever play yourself.
