Report: The Rams Asked Brett Favre To Unretire

For fuck's sake, St. Louis, even Tebow would have been a better idea.

After Sam Bradford suffered a season-ending ACL tear on Sunday, the Rams were down to just Kellen Clemens at quarterback. They signed Brady Quinn and Austin Davis, but ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that their first choice had a little more name recognition, and was a bit older.

Schefter says the Rams called 44-year-old Brett Favre on Sunday night and asked him to come out of retirement and finish off the season. Favre, who hasn't played since 2010, turned them down. Earlier this month, Favre told USA Today, "I am [in shape], but I am no way considering playing." Guess he wasn't kidding.

I have to admit, Favre's return would have been fascinating. It also probably would have moved more than a few tickets and jerseys. But St. Louis is 3-4, still in the playoff hunt. Maybe calling the old fart is less a sign they're giving up on the season and more an indictment of their complete inability to have a backup plan in place for Bradford going down.

Update: In a radio interview, Favre confirmed the Rams reached out to him. "It’s flattering," he said, "but there’s no way in hell I’m going to do that."
