For a few days now, it appeared former No. 1 overall pick and New York Knicks legend Andrea Bargnani would be signing with the Sacramento Kings. It was a match made in #basketballtwitter heaven.
In a twist ending, we found out Sunday Bargnani would be signing with the Brooklyn Nets instead. And to add insult to injury for Sacramento, Bargnani is taking less money to sign with Brooklyn.
To recap, we’ve had reports of Wesley Matthews, Monta Ellis, Corey Brewer, Patrick Beverly and now Bargnani as players who negotiated with Sacramento but ultimately chose to sign somewhere else for less money. (Matthews eventually earned the max thanks to the DeAndre Jordan saga.)
In case you’re wondering why it’s a big deal Bargs is turning down more money from any team, allow us to refresh your memory:
For the Kings, between overpays for Kosta Koufos (who will have to share time with Boogie and lottery pick Willie Cauley-Stein) and Rajon Rondo (who will have to try not to murder someone) and their spectacularly awful trade with the 76ers, Bargnani turning down a two-year contract may be their best move of the offseason.
