Young Briton Danny Hart obliterated the best downhill mountain bikers by nearly 12 seconds this weekend at the world championships in Champery, Switzerland. Normally, Hart's performance would soon retreat back into the shadow world that is downhill mountain biking. But no. Not this day. Not if commentators Rob Warner and Martin Whiteley have anything to say about it. And by god do they ever. My favorite: "Danny, stay on your bike!" In this context, it feels like both an exhortation to athletic greatness and a metaphor for something much more profound (of which we cannot speak directly lest all significance be lost, much as we cannot perceive certain star clusters by regarding them smack on).
