Montreal Canadiens goalie Carey Price cleaned up at the NHL Awards show Wednesday night, winning the Hart Trophy as the league’s MVP, the Vezina Trophy as the league’s best goalie, and the Ted Linsday Award for the league’s most outstanding player as voted by the NHLPA.
Uh, that’s not bad! Price was a revelation in net for the Canadiens this past season, recording 44 victories, a 1.96 goals-against average, and a .933 save percentage. Price led the league in all three categories, the first goalie to do so since the legendary Ed Belfour in 1991. Price is the first goalie to win the Hart Trophy since Jose Theodore in 2002, who also did so as a Canadien.
Price’s 44 victories are a franchise record for Montreal, breaking the previous record of 42, achieved twice by Jacques Plante and once by Ken Dryden. Of course, the Canadiens’s season came to an earlier end than they hoped when they were bounced in the second round by eventual Stanley Cup finalist Tampa Bay. Price’s one-man show may not have been enough this season—but he came as close as he could.
