Butts are quite important in all sports, but in hockey, they’re useful for creating separation with defenders. Connor McDavid stuck out his butt and played a huge part in the Edmonton Oilers’ first goal of Thursday’s 2-1 overtime win.

McDavid’s butt was only one element of the full play, of course. The Oilers captain’s speed allowed him to overwhelm Blackhawks defenders Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook, and he also had the awareness and courage to try a backhand pass across the crease to Patrick Maroon. It worked:
