Here's Dan Shaughnessy, during last night's rain delay, with the Sox leading the Orioles 3-2 and the Yankees leading the Rays 7-0: "I think the Rays are not going to win tonight. I think that's the one thing that we've eliminated tonight is that the Red Sox season is not going to end tonight. They live to play another day." And here's Shaughnessy again, in this morning's Boston Globe: "Game, season, dream. It was all over."
Now, I'm not one of those superstitious types who make a habit of attributing statistically aberrant baseball phenomena to angry cosmic forces roused by fairly unremarkable human behavior, but if I were, I'd start working up a pitch on that Curse of Dan Shaughnessy book right now.
UPDATE: A reader points out that, technically, Shaughnessy was right. The Red Sox season ended at 12:05 a.m.
