Robert Grays, a sophomore cornerback who played for Midwestern State, died Tuesday from a neck injury suffered during a game on Saturday.
Grays suffered the injury while making a tackle late in Saturday’s game against Texas A&M-Kingsville. The tackle was described as a routine play by the school’s athletic director (via The Wichitan):
“He’s made this tackle hundreds of times, but it was just one of those situations that landed wrong,” Kyle Williams, interim athletic director, said. “It was traumatic for all of us, particularly the football players. As a campus, we are thinking about him every day.”
Grays was 19 years old.
