Now for a joyous update to the Engelb Vielma Tracker: The utility infielder has been called up to the major leagues for the first time.
Vielma will round out Baltimore’s bench for now. The big move comes less than a month after manager Buck Showalter went out of his way to praise the defensive specialist’s glove. “I see some things in him defensively,” he told the Baltimore Sun.
It was a busy offseason for the 23-year-old, who was signed by the Minnesota Twins as an international free agent back in 2011 and had spent his entire career in their organization until this winter. After the Twins designated him for assignment in September, he spent the next few months being claimed off waivers four times and traded once. He then had some visa troubles that delayed his start in camp. But now he’s here!
His full name? Engelb Stalin Vielma. Yes, I know what you’re thinking—Engelb isn’t short for Engelbert? But it isn’t, at least not according to Baseball-Reference. So please do enjoy some anagrams of that full name:
- A Ballet’s Livening Me
- Tameable Snivelling
- Ambivalent Leg Lines
- Labia Event Smelling
- Baseman Telling Evil
Until next time!
