Corey Griffin, a former Boston College hockey player, was pulled out of the water in Nantucket in the early hours of Saturday morning after he jumped off a building into the harbor. Griffin apparently dove off the Juice Guys building, a local smoothie and ice cream shop on the water. An off-duty lifeguard eventually found him and pulled him out. He was later taken to Cottage Hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was 27 years old.
A witness stated Griffin had jumped, then floated to the surface before going under the water again and not resurfacing.
Nantucket lifeguard Colin Perry, who was off-duty at the time, happened to be working nearby and was called to the scene. Perry made several dives and recovered Griffin from the harbor bottom, police said.
Griffin was reported missing around 2:00 a.m. After Perry pulled him out of the water, police officers administered CPR at the scene. He was then taken to the hospital and pronounced dead at 3:00 a.m.
Update: Griffin was friends with Pete Frates, the 29-year-old former captain of the Boston College baseball team who was diagnosed with ALS. Frates is largely credited with starting the Ice Bucket Challenge and Griffin had reportedly just raised $100,000 for the cause. Corey Griffin was ecstatic when he called his father Friday night from Nantucket Island. The 27-year-old had just raised $100,000 for ALS in honor of his friend, Pete Frates, whose struggle with the disease turned the Ice Bucket Challenge into a viral sensation.
