Hawaii blocked three field goals in their win against Western Carolina last weekend. One was returned 89 yards the other way for a touchdown, while another ended with an unfortunate and comical injury. After 6-foot-7, 300-pound defensive lineman Viane Moala got his hands on a kick in the first quarter, he ran to his sideline and bumped chests with linebackers coach Sean Duggan. Duggan is not a 300-pound lineman, however, and he injured himself in the collision.
According to Hawaii News Now, Duggan broke his wrist and dislocated his elbow. Here’s the play where it happened, and also Hawaii coach Nick Rolovich clowning him over it.
As Rolovich said, Moala is a huge dude who was always going to win that collision:
I’ve never seen anything like it. You advise against chest-bumping a six-foot-seven, 300lb. Tongan. That’s just - as a new haole guy on the island, that’s just not something you should make a habit.
He’ll be in a sling for a while. He’ll never forget it. He’s a young coach, but I know I’ll never let him forget it.
Duggan will reportedly travel to UCLA this weekend, where he’ll likely be less springy on the sidelines.
