John McEnroe has shared a video of himself condemning Margaret Court’s homophobic bullshit from last week, though he stopped short of joining those asking for the arena that bears her name to be given a new moniker.
On Wednesday, less than a week after she announced that she would boycott Qantas Airways for its CEO’s support of same-sex marriage, Court kept her anti-LGBTQ blather going—saying that “tennis is full of lesbians” and calling transgender children the work of “the devil” before comparing those who support exploring gender and sexuality to Adolf Hitler. Those remarks led Martina Navratilova to write an open letter to the Sydney Morning Herald asking for Margaret Court Arena, which is one of the hosts of the Australian Open, to be renamed.
“Margaret Court is telling us, ‘Tennis is full of lesbians,’” McEnroe said in his response. “The way I see it, there are three options regarding this statement. Number one―this is true, and who gives a fuck? Number two―this is not true, and who should give a fuck? And number three―this is half-true, and should we really give a fuck?”
His support for renaming the court that bears her name wasn’t nearly so strong, as McEnroe claimed that “the jury is still out” on the subject before offering his personal hope for the court:
“When same-sex marriage becomes legal in Australia, I will personally call my good friend Elton John to host the biggest same-sex mass wedding ceremony ever seen—in Margaret Court Arena. Margaret, that’s just the kind of guy I am.”
