Kellen Winslow Jr. Charged With Raping Unconscious Teenager

Former NFL player Kellen Winslow Jr., currently charged with multiple counts of forcible rape and kidnapping, got the feature treatment recently from USA Today and the San Diego Union-Tribune. Buried in those stories were some important updates on the criminal case filed against Winslow—he’s now charged with raping a 17-year-old girl in San Diego County in 2003 while she was unconscious. He previously was charged with forcibly raping two transient women.

Winslow has pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

In court hearings held so far, the women known as Jane Doe 1 and Jane Doe 2 have testified. Jane Doe 1 said she was raped by Winslow, who also threatened to murder her, according to the Union-Tribune. Jane Doe 2 said in court she got to know Winslow as he would stop and talk to her over several months. One day, he offered to take her to get coffee, she said per USA Today. Instead, Winslow drove his Hummer down a little-used road where he raped her and told he would murder her if she said anything. Jane Doe 2 was questioned about why she didn’t say until last month that Winslow had offered her money for sex*. She replied: “I mean, what does that have to do with rape, sir? I’m the victim.”

Both women were questioned by Winslow’s lawyer, who appears to be pursuing an argument that everything that happened was consensual. When Jane Doe 1 was asked to identify who attacked her, she pointed to one of Winslow’s attorneys but, as the Union-Tribune points out, Winslow looks much different now versus how did he when prosecutors say the crimes happened.

So far, no other details about the 2003 case have been released.

Both Jane Does said they feared Winslow, who is out on bond. Jane Doe 2 was back on the streets when USA Today spoke with her, after a crime victims fund had paid for her to stay in a hotel for about two weeks. When her friends asked her how she was doing, she just said “OK.”
