The “Philly Special”—the trick play at the end of the first half of Super Bowl 52 when backup tight end Trey Burton took the ball on an end around and threw a touchdown pass to quarterback Nick Foles—is already etched in the mind of every Philadelphia sports fan.
It’s already etched on one fan’s skin. The Athletic did an oral history of it. It was so ballsy ESPN and SI wrote stories that were just about how Doug Pederson has big balls.
Now, to add to the play’s lore comes this clip from Inside the NFL: Nick Foles actually called it for himself. Pederson thought about it for a few seconds, and said okay.
This makes sense, of course. If you were a quarterback in the Super Bowl and there was a play where you caught a touchdown, you’d call it for yourself. I think what’s surprising is that Nick Foles didn’t call this play for himself more.
