Three women representing Nigeria became the first-ever African bobsled team to qualify for the Olympics, and the country’s first-ever representatives at the Winter Olympics, when they finished their required fifth qualifying race in Calgary today.
The team of Seun Adigun—who was also an Olympic hurdler in 2012—Ngozi Onwumere, and Akuoma Omeoga will head to Pyeongchang next February. They will try to unseat Canada, who have won the last two gold medals in women’s bobsledding, though the country’s winning team of Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyse will not compete together this year.
These three women may not be Nigeria’s only Olympians in 2018. Simidele Adeagbo is still in the hunt to qualify in the skeleton.
