It’s time to thaw that frozen heart of yours, with the magical power of sportsmanship!
In a women’s 5000m heat this morning, New Zealand’s Nikki Hamblin stumbled and fell to the track, and American Abbey D’Agostino tripped over her. Hamblin was on the ground trying to come to terms with the end of her Olympics, when D’Agostino hauled her to her feet.
“Get up, get up! We have to finish!” D’Agostino told her. “This is the Olympic Games. We have to finish this.’”
As they started to run, D’Agostino realized she had hurt her knee. Hamblin came back to check on her, but D’Agostino urged her on. D’Agostino limped her way to the finish, where Hamblin was waiting for her.
D’Agostino was helped off in a wheelchair; the extent of her knee injury isn’t known. But because both were tripped, both will go on through to the 5k final, despite finishing last and next-to-last.
