With the Phillies and Cardinals tied in the bottom of the ninth inning tonight, Freddy Galvis came to bat for Philadelphia with teammate Odubel Herrera on first base and two outs. A double to left field, with third base coach Juan Samuel giving Herrera a very clear sign to stop safely at third, would seem to be a good thing there—until Herrera decided to go rogue and run all the way around Samuel and his stop sign, only to be thrown out at home plate as the final out of the inning.
Here’s another look, courtesy of the Philadelphia CSN broadcast, with the video paused to show exactly when Samuel gave Herrera the stop sign. It wasn’t with much time to spare before he needed to stop, no, but it seems to be enough time to realize that he wasn’t being asked to barrel all the way around the third base coach.
The Phillies went on to lose, 7-6, in 10 innings. Ouch.
