You've seen the video, you've marveled at the tattoo. But you won't have Dallas police officer Robert Powell to kick around anymore; his attorney announced today that Powell has resigned.
This saga is way beyond firestorm stage. It was only two weeks ago that Powell stopped Houston Texans running back Ryan Moats for running a red light on the way to the hospital to see his dying mother-in-law. You know the rest of the story from that night. In the following days, Powell has been accused of falsifying a police report, first defended his actions and then apologized, had the wife of the Dallas Cowboys' Zach Thomas claim similar mistreatment, and shown the world his badge tattoo on MySpace. It was all, apparently, too much.
"I made this decision in the hope that my resignation will allow the Dallas Police Department, my fellow officers, and the citizens of Dallas to better reflect on this experience, learn from the mistakes made, and move forward," Powell said in a statement released by his attorney.
"I still hope to speak with the Moats family to personally express my deep regret, sympathy, and to apologize for my poor judgment and unprofessional conduct," Powell said in his statement, in which he also apologized to fellow police officers.
