Report: Aldon Smith To Be Treated For Substance Abuse After Today's Game

Chris Mortensen reports that "a consensus" has been reached regarding 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith, who crashed his car Friday morning, allegedly failed a breathalyzer, and allegedly had pills and weed in his possession at the time of the crash: Smith has a substance-abuse problem and needs treatment. But that treatment won't begin until after Smith gets to play in today's game against the Colts.

Mort's story does not say whether Smith agreed with that consensus, perhaps on the condition that he be permitted to play today. Either way, neither the Niners nor the league could force Smith to sit out today's game. League officials told Mort the Niners cannot suspend Smith under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement. Roger Goodell likewise won't immediately suspend Smith because his DUI case has not been adjudicated.
