NFL referee Jeff Triplette, famous for blinding Orlando Brown and bungling a 2013 replay review badly enough to trigger changes to the NFL’s replay system, was part of the officiating crew for Saturday’s AFC Wild Card game, a sloppily officiated game that drew harsh criticism from former officiating head Mike Pereira. Today, Triplette has reportedly decided to retire from officiating:
It’s fair to say that any referee of any major professional sport who sticks around long enough will accrue a list of memorable fuck-ups, but it’s also fair to say that Jeff Triplette’s record as an NFL referee is fucking hilariously bad, bad enough that the idea of him working a playoff game was ludicrous four years ago. PFT has a handy rundown of everything his crew screwed up during Titans-Chiefs: bad, hasty whistles; misunderstood or miscommunicated rulings; confused ball spots; misidentified players; and roller-coaster replay reviews. NFL fans will not miss Jeff Triplette. Fans of screwball comedy might.
