Whenever an NFL coach gets fired, it’s always fun to sit around and wait for the follow-up stories that shed some light on just how bad things were before the firing. The Dolphins fired head coach Joe Philbin this morning, and the National Football Post’s Aaron Wilson has provided us with such a report.
From Wilson:
On Saturday during practice, [Ryan] Tannehill, after a couple of practice squad players forced turnovers, Tannehill made negative comments toward them, including saying: “Enjoy your practice squad paycheck, enjoy your practice squad trophy.”
Sources say this has been going on for the past few weeks as the practice squad players have been intercepting Tannehill and frustrating the former Texas A&M wide receiver turned quarterback.
The report goes on to say that Philbin actually had to tell the practice squad players to take it easy on Tannehill because the quarterback was getting so rattled. Starters getting into it with practice squad players is probably something that happens all the time in the NFL, but it’s really funny in this scenario because it’s Ryan Tannehill doing the sneering, and not, say, Aaron Rodgers or Peyton Manning. This is what would happen if Spaulding Smails was an NFL quarterback.
