Report: Ryan Tannehill Might Need Season-Ending Knee Surgery

After going down and re-injuring his knee during practice this afternoon, Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill might require season-ending surgery to repair it, according to reports from Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Tannehill originally injured his knee last December, when he partially tore his ACL during a game against the Cardinals. He opted against having surgery at the time, and since, his knee has been “a ticking time bomb that was going to go off at any time,” per one of Schefter’s sources. Tannehill re-aggravated the injury today on a non-contact play:

Though “the Dolphins are growing increasingly concerned that surgery will be the most viable and likely option,” per Schefter, the quarterback will get a second and third opinion before making a decision. If he chooses not to undergo the surgery, he can rest for six to eight weeks to see if the injury heals enough on its own to allow him to resume playing. Either way, the outlook isn’t especially rosy.

Backup QB Matt Moore will presumably step up in Tannehill’s absence. Someone else might be available, too.
