So this was a pretty amusing basketball box score sent to me by a friend: Final, University of San Francisco 74, Academy of Art 28. I wish I could have attended that matchup of titans.
But here's some things I didn't know about the Academy of Art: It's the largest private art school in the nation, and its men's basketball team isn't that terrible. The Urban Knights have actually won three games, even though the program was started from scratch this season so that the school could compete in NCAA Div. II athletics.
And while the loss to the Dons was a blowout, most of their games have been competitive. AAU is coached by Peter Thibeaux, who played for the Golden State Warriors and in Europe.
Fun facts: Among notable alumni is Kevin Pereira, host of Attack of the Show! ... In 2003, Academy of Art expelled a student for writing a story in creative writing class about a serial killer who dismembered his victims. Subsequently, two teachers were also dismissed over the incident, and a resulting protest included letters of support for the student from Salman Rushdie and Stephen King. In response to a school newspaper editorial supporting the protest, the newspaper was shut down.
