A soccer player died of his injuries in the hospital after suffering a horrible tackle in a match.
On May 10, Persiraja Banda Aceh were playing PSAP Sigli in the Indonesian Premier League. One Persiraja player attempted a long, hopeful shot that dipped just in front of goalkeeper Agus Rahman. The ball ricocheted off Rahman's chest and directly into the path of Persiraja forward Akli Fairuz.
The two raced for the ball, but Fairuz was closer, and arrived first. Just as he met the rebound, Rahman lifted his foot and kicked Fairuz directly in the midsection, studs first.
Fairuz scored, but the referee disallowed the goal, and then the striker was subbed off as both teams erupted into a fight. Fairuz seemed to be fine, and watched the rest of the match from the bench. After the game, though, he was admitted to a hospital where it was discovered he'd suffered severe internal injuries. He was in the hospital for six days and underwent surgery, but the doctors were unable to save him. On May 16, Akli Fairuz passed.
This tackle was despicable; it's unclear what, if any, consequences keeper Rahman will have to face.
