Not often that an SEC tilt will give you flashbacks to a Div. III game from five years ago. But today the No. 20 Aggies started slinging laterals every which way but forward while down five and out of time against No. 6 LSU, almost raising the ghosts of Trinity vs. Millsaps.
A&M needed to go 79 yards in the final second. Johnny Manziel, the Aggies' redshirt freshman phenom, Curly-spun his way out of trouble and completed a 17-yard pass. Then the calliopes fired up as the Aggies flipped the ball back and forth six times (with perhaps an extra tip in there, to boot) before Barkevious Mingo recovered an errant lateral—that would be a "fumble"—and ended the game. Another day at the office for Les Miles.
After leading 12-0 in the second quarter, this stings for A&M. The Tigers won and stayed in the thick of the national title contention by hounding Manziel, who wound up throwing three picks and needed 56 passes to total 276 yards, while running 17 times at 1.8 yards per. LSU totaled just 310 yards of offense, but any time the Tigers force five turnovers, their offense might as well be tits on a boar hog. Really it's all over but the laterals.
