The final few seconds of tonight’s Hofstra-Monmouth game were pretty damn fun, with Hofstra perfectly executing the ol’ make-and-intentional-miss with their last free throws to set up a game-winning three.
Monmouth, who led for most of the game, was up by three with five seconds to play. They opted to foul Hofstra’s Justin Wright-Foreman juuuust as he was setting up for a three-point attempt, getting lucky with a foul call on the ground rather than on the shot. That set Hofstra up for a one-and-one. Wright-Foreman made the first and missed the second—and with the clock ticking down, teammate Jalen Ray played the hero by sinking a three to put Hofstra up by one and win the game.
Textbook! And the first time they’d pulled it off, too. From Newsday:
“It’s funny how those plays you work on that might never happen do happen, but we were able to execute,” Pride coach Joe Mihalich said.
So how many times does it actually work at practice? “Never,” Mihalich said.
“That was the first time,” Wright-Foreman chimed in.
Which means, of course, that they’ll never be able to pull it off quite like this again. But if it was only going to work once, this was a pretty sweet showing for it.
