This is so dumb.
Champions League runners-up Borussia Dortmund played Marseille in the group stages of the tournament today, a couple weeks after a shock loss to Napoli. Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski scored in the 19th minute, and the score remained 1-0 into halftime. In the 51st, Marseille midfielder Alaixys Romao was carded for taking down Dortmund's Sven Bender about 45 yards from goal, which led to the above nonsense from Marco Reus.
The Dortmund playmaker stepped up to take the set piece, and lofted a free kick into the box. But he overhit the ball, and the ball looked to be sailing just over the scrum of players inside the 18. Six-foot-four Dortmund defender Mats Hummels, however, went up for the header, screening Marseille keeper Steve Mandanda in the process. The ball dropped inside the six, deflected off Mandanda and snuck just inside the goal line to double Dortmund's lead.
Dortmund would go on to win, 3-0.
