Finally, fans get what they've been clamoring for for years: a way to get closer to the WNBA action.
For Saturday afternoon's nationally televised Mercury-Fever game, ref Lamont Simpson wore a pair of glasses with a miniature camera. It went poorly:
"The first half, it took some adjusting to, especially when you started running and actually broke a sweat," the veteran official said. "The goggles started to loosen up and the sweat around the band started to loosen up. The first half was pretty much just adjusting the headset."
Everything was fixed for the second half though, and ABC was able to cut to the Ref Cam for all the game's exciting moments, like jumpers, free throws, and more jumpers. There are currently no plans to bring the technology to NBA refs, probably because NBA games are fixed.
