That gloriously frustrating scenario that can only occur in the National League smiled on the Cubs in the sixth inning of their losing battle against the Dodgers, when the pitcher came up with the bases loaded and two outs. Los Angeles was already leading 3-1, trying to bury Chicago, but manager Dave Roberts decided to keep starter Yu Darvish in the game instead of pinch-hitting Curtis Granderson. In doing so, he was essentially surrendering the inning.
Darvish was smart, though. He showed bunt, crowded the plate, and even though he clearly never had any intention of taking the bat off his shoulder, Cubs reliever Carl Edwards Jr. was completely psyched out. He threw four straight balls, despite visits from both his catcher and manager, and Darvish walked, giving the Dodgers a 4-1 lead.
Even on ball four, Darvish backed off and looked a little confused, but as soon as he realized what he had done, he gave a great, emphatic bat toss:
Edwards struck out the next hitter, Chris Taylor, on three straight pitches.
